Our firm is comprised of a group of architects who have years of experience in working together on higher education, cultural, visitor centers and historic properties. Our comprehensive design expertise encompasses programming and planning, conceptual and technical design, as well as management and implementation of projects ranging from small, state of the art facilities for higher educational clients and cultural institutions.
Based in Virginia, Bartzen & Ball, PLLC is an architectural practice specializing in planning and design. Our work encompasses a variety of project types including office buildings, institutional, academic and athletic facilities, cultural and visitor's centers, historic preservation and adaptive reuse, and interior design. Bartzen + Ball was established in 2001 by Maynard Ball and Bernard 'Tut' Bartzen, both of whom were partners in larger architectural firms, respectively SmithGroup of Washington, DC and Marcellus Wright Cox and Smith of Richmond, VA.

We believe architecture is a collaboration between engineers and consultants as well as the client, its representatives, and users. We enter a commitment to form a design team with a goal to work together from project definition and conceptualization through opening in order to produce a building of excellence in function, craft and spirit for this and generations to come. As architects, it is both our responsibility and joy to orchestrate this process and to see that commitment to fulfillment.
